Chinchilla sits on the Warrego Highway in the Western Downs, in the middle of the Surat Basin. It is farming country, known for grain, cotton, cattle and its famous melons, and over recent decades it has also become a centre for the coal seam gas industry and large solar and energy projects. That combination produces some of the most varied container work we quote.
Gas fields, energy projects and contractors
The gas and energy industry around Chinchilla, Miles, Tara and Condamine brings a steady stream of contractors: drillers, civil crews, electrical and instrumentation firms, fencing and pipeline contractors, and camp and maintenance suppliers. They need secure storage on site and in town for tools, spares, PPE, consumables and paperwork. Containers are the standard answer because they are secure, lockable steel, easy to move from one lease to the next, and easy to fit out.
Most gas and energy sites have strict access rules. Inductions, journey management, gate codes, speed limits and dust controls all apply to delivery trucks as well as workers. Tell us the site requirements and a contact when you ask for a quote, so the delivery is planned properly.
Dangerous goods storage
Fuels, oils, solvents, chemicals and gas cylinders are part of everyday work in the Surat Basin, on farms as much as on leases. They need to be stored properly: separated from general stores, ventilated, and with spill containment. A dangerous goods container has ventilation panels and a bunded sump floor that holds spills, and it keeps flammable stock in one controlled place.
DG storage requirements depend on the class and quantity of what you hold. Our dangerous goods guide explains the basics in plain English, and if you tell us what is on the shelf we will match the unit to it.
Farms and the Western Downs
Grain, cotton and cattle dominate the land around Chinchilla, with melon and vegetable growers closer to town. Farmers use containers for seed and fertiliser, machinery spares, chemical storage, tools and workshop space. A container can be dropped at a remote paddock, a set of cattle yards or a pump site and moved later.
For bigger properties, a 40ft gives a lot of floor space for the money, and two containers set apart with a roof between them make a cheap machinery shelter.
Black soil, dust and heat
Much of the district is black soil. It is rock hard in the dry and turns to thick, sticky mud after rain, and many roads and tracks become impassable until they dry out. A loaded truck cannot deliver across wet black soil, so when it rains the sensible option is to move the day. Pick a set-down spot on a gravel pad or the firmest high ground available, and put sleepers or pads under the corners.
Summers are hot and dusty. A steel container in full sun gets very hot inside, which matters for chemicals, electronics and anything that softens with heat. Shade, light-coloured paint, vents or a roof over the top all help, and heat is one more reason to store flammable liquids in a proper DG unit.
Containers for Surat Basin work
- Dangerous goods — fuels, oils, solvents and chemicals, bunded and ventilated
- 20ft — tool cribs and site stores that move from lease to lease
- 40ft — contractor laydown, farm machinery and bulk spares
- High cube — workshops and site offices with standing room
- Side-opening — spares and consumables that need full-length access
Setting a container up for site use
Contractors often want a container that works as more than a box. Shelving along one wall, a bench at the door end, lighting and a lock box over the padlock are common additions. A high cube gives you standing room for racking. If the container is going to be used as a crib room or office, ventilation and shade matter even more in western Queensland heat.
Remember that anything added inside should not block the vents on a dangerous goods unit, and fuels and chemicals should never share a container with general stores. If you need both, two units side by side is a tidy setup.
How we quote the Western Downs
Freight to Chinchilla and surrounding towns is quoted with the container as one delivered price. It depends on where a suitable unit is held, how far off the highway you are and any site requirements. We confirm the delivery day with you once the order is placed, and if rain has closed your roads we talk about the best time to go rather than risk the job.

Asked about Chinchilla
Can you deliver onto a gas lease or energy project site?
Yes, as long as the site's access rules are met. Send us the site requirements, induction details and a contact when you ask for a quote so the delivery is planned properly.
Do I need a dangerous goods container for fuel and chemicals?
For flammable liquids and many chemicals, yes. A DG unit has ventilation and a bunded floor. Requirements depend on the class and quantity you store; tell us what you have and we will match the unit.
What happens if it rains on the black soil before delivery?
Wet black soil will not carry a loaded truck. We will move the delivery until the ground and roads are firm rather than risk getting stuck.
Can a container be moved from one site to another later?
Yes. That is one of the main reasons contractors use them. A tilt-tray or sidelifter can pick it up and move it when the job shifts.
