The Gold Coast is a long, thin city: beach suburbs along the coast, canal estates and high-rise behind them, the M1 corridor through the middle, and hinterland valleys and mountains to the west. Where your address sits in that strip decides most of what matters about a container delivery.

Building sites, shops and acreage

Construction is the biggest driver of container demand on the Coast. The northern growth corridor around Coomera, Pimpama, Ormeau and Upper Coomera has been building out for years, and site lockups, material stores and temporary offices go with every stage. Builders use 20ft units as tool and material lockups, and 40ft units where there is room and a lot to store.

Retail and hospitality is the second group. Shops and venues in Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Burleigh and Coolangatta are rarely built with enough back-of-house storage, so stock, furniture and seasonal gear ends up in a container at a warehouse or on a property somewhere else. Event companies and market stallholders do the same with marquees, staging and stock.

The third group is acreage. Behind the coast, places like Mudgeeraba, Tallebudgera Valley, Currumbin Valley, Guanaba and Wongawallan have larger blocks where horses, machinery, feed and garden gear need a dry, lockable home. A container is a quick alternative to building a shed, although whether you need approval depends on how it is used and how long it stays, so check with City of Gold Coast.

Canal estates, high-rise and hinterland roads

Canal suburbs such as Broadbeach Waters, Sorrento, Isle of Capri and Paradise Point have quiet streets but tight turning circles, and blocks are often built out to the boundaries. A tilt-tray needs about 3.5 metres of width and a straight run to back in, so a narrow driveway between a fence and a garage wall may mean the container goes on the front lawn instead of down the side.

Apartment and townhouse complexes add body corporate rules to the mix. Many do not allow a container on common property at all, and those that do usually want notice. Sort that out before you order.

Up in the hinterland, the roads to Tamborine Mountain and Springbrook are steep and winding, and some have restrictions on long vehicles. Access to a mountain property can also involve steep driveways and soft shoulders. We look at those jobs case by case and match the truck to the road; send photos and the address and we will tell you what is realistic.

Coastal air, storms and set-down

Close to the beach, salt carried on the sea breeze settles on everything. Containers handle it if they are maintained: rinse the roof and doors now and then, keep the locking gear greased and touch up any chips in the paint. Summer storms on the Coast can be heavy, so set the container on firm ground with blocks under the corners and a slight fall towards the doors so rain runs off rather than pooling on the roof.

Cargo-worthy and new containers are wind and watertight, which keeps rain out from above. They are not a substitute for good placement: do not put one in a low spot where stormwater collects.

Choosing a container for a Gold Coast job

  • 20ft — builders' lockups, shop stock, household renovations and moves
  • 40ft — large sites, event gear, acreage storage where a sidelifter can get in
  • 10ft — tight blocks, townhouse driveways and small business archive storage
  • High cube — workshops, racking and conversions where headroom matters
  • Side-opening — stock that has to be reached quickly by forklift or by hand

How Gold Coast deliveries are quoted

Every Gold Coast quote includes the freight as part of one delivered price. The number depends on how far along the coast or up into the hinterland you are, what truck your access needs and where the right unit is sitting. We confirm the delivery day with you once the order is placed, and if anything about the site is unusual we talk it through beforehand rather than on the day.

If you are not sure whether to hire or buy, tell us how long you need it. A short build or a single renovation usually suits hire; ongoing storage for a business or acreage usually suits buying.

Asked about Gold Coast

Can you deliver to Tamborine Mountain or Springbrook?

Often, yes, but mountain roads and driveways need checking first. Some routes have length limits and many driveways are steep. Send the address and a few photos and we will tell you which truck suits the job, or if it is not practical.

Do I need approval for a container on a Gold Coast property?

It depends on how the container is used and how long it stays. Temporary storage during a build is treated differently from a permanent structure. Check with City of Gold Coast, and with your body corporate if you are in a complex.

Will a container rust near the beach?

Salt air speeds up rust on bare steel, so a coastal container needs a little care: an occasional rinse, greased door gear and paint touch-ups. Keeping it off the ground on blocks makes a big difference.

Can a builder hire a container for the length of a job?

Yes. Hire suits a build with a known finish, and the unit goes back when the job is done. If the container is going to follow the business from site to site for years, buying usually works out better.
